Parent Power

Carolina International School understands that parents are children’s first and most important teachers, and will always remain so. We respect and honor that special relationship, and seek to reinforce family bonds through close communication with parents.

We expect parents to be active in the life of the school, beginning with the development of their children’s Individual Learning Plans. Parents are encouraged to stay informed about our educational program: our goals, objectives, and progress in attaining them.

Classroom Visits

CIS exists today because of our active, dedicated parents. Many of you chose this school because you want to be involved in your child’s education, and have inquired about visiting the classrooms. That is welcome at CIS, with your cooperation. Here is our perspective:

We see two purposes for visiting the class:

  1. Volunteer help for the teacher. Our teachers appreciate your offers to help. To make sure your time is used effectively, our teachers will identify tasks and will schedule times when they most need your help. We want you to feel that your time in the classroom was productive, whether with as a tutor, clerical help, lunch or play supervisor, or other role. Please contact the teacher directly to schedule a time to volunteer.
  2. Observe the class. Some parents would also like to see the class in action. You can make an appointment directly with the teacher to visit the class for this purpose.

We want to create an orderly environment that maximizes our teachers’ effectiveness. When unexpected visitors enter the classroom, the students’ attention shifts and the dynamics change. Teachers have to adjust and that can add another challenge to their already demanding job. They need consistent time with their students to create a coherent atmosphere for learning.

You are an essential part of our school community and are welcome on our campus. By making arrangements beforehand as requested above, everyone involved can gain the maximum: you, the children, and the teachers.

Parents as Partners in Education

We also welcome parents to the classroom in our “Parents as Partners in Education” program. By identifying parents’ occupations, we can link them with units of study during the school year. Interested parents will be invited to visit the class and share how the students’ curriculum relates to their field of work. This reinforces the practical relevance of their schoolwork, models a career, and weaves the fabric of community within our school family.

Parent Service Teams

Fulfilling the potential of CIS through service and support

"Service Teams"

There are many ways our parents/guardians help fulfill the promise of Carolina International School. Many of these are through the work of “Service Teams”—“service” to reflect our purpose and CIS core value, and “team” to describe the way we work together to meet our goals.

Find Your Niche

We hope each family will find an area of interest that excites you. We ask that each CIS family volunteers in some way. With your help, we will be astounded at what we can achieve as a school community.

Whatever you can do to help—whether full-time or a few minutes a week—your contribution will be appreciated and recognized.

Athletics Service Team

The Athletics service team is offering P.E. Uniforms. You can now order your child’s PE uniforms through the Service team and they will be sent to the school.

Transportation

Carolina International School will rely on parent carpooling for two reasons: 1) our families are widely spread across two counties and 2) the expense of operating a fleet of buses is prohibitive when we have so many other start-up costs. By relying on parents to transport their children to school, Carolina International School can direct its resources to provide the best possible educational program for our students. If any family is unable to provide transportation by either of these means, we ask that they contact the school to see how we can meet their need.

Our parent committee for Transportation/Carpooling will help organize this important aspect of school life.
