Environmental Committee Begins At CIS

The CIS Environmental Committee was established last week to address our goals for the school and community.  It was a very exciting and productive meeting.  The members of the committee are:  Saretha Lavarnway, Ben Redmond, Juliette Jones, Anne Atkins-Bostic, Tammi Remsburg, Dina Patsiavos, Michel Morton, Casey Allison, Dr. Beall, Dee Duncan, Quinton Dulaney, Charlene Franaszek and Pam Dulaney.

In the weeks to come, you as families of CIS will begin to see some small but powerful steps towards CIS becoming a campus that respects and believes in teaching environmental stewardship, awareness, and appreciation. Each week at Monday assemblies, a different grade level will present information pertaining to the environment. Mrs. Atkins-Bostic’s class kicked off this initiative yesterday. It is a small yet exciting development.

During the organizational meeting, the members also established facilitators for various environmental clubs and events.  Ms. Juliette Jones and Ms. Dina Patsiavos will be sponsoring our environmental student club.  Information will be sent home and posted at school in the next few weeks about the club.  Ms. Pam Dulaney and Ms. Juliette Jones will be chairing the Earth Day committee.  The committee chairpersons will be looking for additional members comprised of teachers, parents and students in the months to come.  Ms. Dee Duncan and Ms. Saretha Lavarnway will be sponsoring an event called Big Sweep on our campus on Saturday, October 1, 2005 (see info below).

As the school year continues, we hope that you as a CIS family will begin to notice a focus on the development of our environmental emphasis.  Small steps make large movements if we all take the steps together.  Remember to think globally and act locally.

Student Council Elections

Students can now apply to be candidates for Student Council for 2005. Elections are next Monday, Sept. 19.

CIS in Big Sweep 2005

Carolina International School will hosts its first annual “Big Sweep” on Saturday, October 1, 2005.  What is Big Sweep?  The 2005 North Carolina Big Sweep is the North Carolina component of the International Coastal Cleanup, an event in which volunteers from all 100 counties in the State—and approximately 90 countries worldwide—come together to clean up our rivers, lakes, and ocean!

North Carolina Big Sweep was founded as Beach Sweep in 1987 by Dr. Lundie Spence of the North Carolina Sea Grant College Program. In that seminal year, the Sweep was nothing more than a hastily-planned coastal cleanup. However, the success that year, attracting over 1,000 volunteers and collecting over 14 tons of debris, allowed the Sweep to grow and rapidly expand inland. In 1989, this public-private partnership officially became Big Sweep, the nation's first statewide waterway cleanup. Since its founding, North Carolina Big Sweep has had more than 200,000 volunteers and collected over seven million pounds of trash from North Carolina watersheds

We would like to have as many families as possible participate in our first annual CIS event.  Information and sign-up procedures will be sent home in Tuesday folders next week.  We’ll work together on Saturday morning, October 1st, for approximately 3 hours, cleaning up and collecting data on our entire campus.  We hope that many of our CIS families will participate in this event. Please mark your calendars and watch for additional information next week.

Parent Volunteers Needed

We are seeking parent volunteers to help tutor individual students during the school day, especially those who can commit to a specific time each week. Please contact Dr. Beall if you would like to assist our students in this meaningful way: 704-455-3847 ext. 6.

Founders Day Celebration

CIS celebrated our first anniversary with our first annual Founders Day ceremony on Monday. The school’s first day of classes was Sept. 13, 2004. Joining the festivities were Founding Board members Nimish Bhatt and Weimin Yuan. Mr. Bhatt (from India) and Mr. Yuan (from China) inspired our students and staff with their vision of a united world family, and their dedication to CIS and our future.
