Carolina International School Update

September 9, 2005

Two of the eight sections of the new middle school building were delivered this week. The other six are expected by the weekend.

New Middle School Building Arrives

The grading is done, the concrete footers are poured, and this week the new Middle School building began to arrive. The entire building should be on the site by the weekend. Then tie-down and set-up crews will move into action, along with plumbing, electrical, IT, security, decking, and sidewalk subcontractors. With good weather and good luck, we should be occupying the building by October.

“Change for Change” Campaign

We’re very proud of our students’ response to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The 7th Grade started a “Change for Change” campaign to collect coins from every class. Their posters and collection boxes can be seen around campus. The campaign will conclude next Friday, September 16th.

After-School Enrichment Sign-Up

Information went home in this week’s Tuesday folder about many of the enrichment opportunities available to CIS students: Ballet, Mad Science, Martial Arts, Piano, Guitar, Drums and Indian Voice lessons.

Registration for these enrichment programs begins September 7th and concludes Friday, September 23.  For programs with limited space, a lottery process will be used to determine the participants.  The enrichment programs start the first week of October in the new middle school building.

Other clubs and activities will be added soon, including drama, chorus, cub scouts, brownies, girl scouts, cross county, volleyball and soccer. Information about these clubs will be sent soon.

We are very excited about the many activities and enrichment opportunities this year for our students and look forward to a very rewarding and fulfilling 2005-2006 school year.  If you have any questions about after school enrichment, please do not hesitate to contact Dee Duncan

Got milk?? Pupils Proud of Puppy Project

CIS Maintenance Director Bill Kreitzer and his wife have saved the lives of over 100 dogs over the years. He recently adopted six puppies whose mother died days after the litter was born. Bill brought the puppies to school to show the students, and Middle School Science teacher Saretha Lavarnway turned the opportunity into an integrated academic project. Students bottle-fed the puppies and studied the digestive system, computed the individual weight gain and developed graphs to chart their development.

Anyone New for Carpooling?

With the high price of gas, more of you may be considering carpooling. We have one family off Robinson Church Road in Charlotte that needs help. Please contact Caroline Cobb if you’d like to assist, or if you need rides for your children.
