International Performing Arts Camp
CIS students will have the first opportunity to register for our exciting summer camp, the International Performing Arts Camp. We have an all-star team of teachers ready to share their expertise in music, dance, art, and games—all with an international flavor.
Campers will prepare an actual production to conclude each two-week session: June 27-July 8 and July 11-22. The deadline for the Early Bird Discount is April 13th. Registration forms are available in the CIS Office.
Lost and Found: Going, Going, Gone
Over the last couple of months, we’ve gathered quite a collection of coats, sweaters, lunch boxes, caps, hats, umbrellas, etc. Unfortunately, NONE of these items are labeled with students’ names, so we have to donate them to a charity.
Please stop by the Office BEFORE APRIL 20th. That is the day we’ll load the items for donation.
Campus News and Information
A question was recently raised regarding the waterquality on campus. We obtain our water through the neighboring housing subdivision. It is quality-controlled and regulated, more so than bottled water. Everyone can feel safe and secure in drinking it, but our students and teachers are also welcome to bring their own water. We encourage drinking water during the day, as the brain needs fluids for optimal functioning.
Our 6th grade students have taken the lead in providing a composting service on campus. The compost pile is located at the west end of the 4th grade building. Pairs of students turn the pile each day. It will eventually be used on our garden beds throughout campus.

CIS Shines in International Education
It’s been a memorable week for CIS in the international education community statewide. On Thursday Dr. Beall presented CIS to the prestigious Advisory Board of World View, the UNC organization that provides international education programs to K-12 educators in NC.
The audience included state legislators, UNC provosts and professors, corporate executives, and representatives from the NC Dept. of Public Instruction and other public schools. What an enthusiastic response we received! They commended our international programs and asked me to submit an article for their next publication.
On Monday I attended the North Carolina in the World Leadership Conference in Raleigh. This initiative from Governor Easley has the support of corporate, educational, and political leaders. The point was made clear: the process of globalization is transforming North Carolina, America, and the world. As one official stated, “You cannot be a great university or school unless you’re an international university or school.”
CIS Students Advance to State Competitions in History, Science
Eileen Smith, first place, regional History Fair
Spencer Nichols and Daniel, fourth place
Colin Moore, Blaise Kress, Ashwin Chandrasekar, and Corey Terral, fourth place, regional Envirothon
Ashley Prince, 2nd place, regional History Fair
HARRISBURG, N.C. - Four seventh grade students and a team of sixth graders at Carolina International School (CIS) will compete in state contests in history and science, respectively, at the end of April after qualifying at regional events.
On April 5, 11 sixth and seventh grade students from CIS competed in the regional Southwest Piedmont District Committee’s National History Day at UNC Charlotte. Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, National History Day is a nonprofit program designed to promote history education for middle and high school students. Students spent several months researching and creating exhibits that embodied this year’s theme “Communication Through History.”
Eileen Smith, a CIS seventh grader, placed first in the junior individual exhibit category for her entry on the Pony Express, and seventh grader Ashley Prince, whose exhibit was on Helen Keller, placed second. Seventh graders Spencer Nichols and Daniel Whitecavage came in fourth place in the junior group exhibit for their project on the Enigma machine, a device used in World War II to encrypt military messages. All four students will compete in the state event on Saturday, April 30 at the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh. If any of the four students qualify in the state competition, they can advance to the national competition in June in College Park, Md. Middle school social studies teacher Melissa Gayan organized the group’s participation in the competition.
The following day, April 6, several teams of CIS sixth and seventh grade students entered the regional Envirothon competition at the Catawba College Center for Environment in Salisbury, NC. A national environmental education competition for middle and high school students, Envirothon tests teams in five resource stations on soil, wildlife, aquatics, forestry and current environmental issues.
A team of four sixth graders from CIS placed fourth in the regional competition, which attracted 20 teams from schools in Cabarrus, Lincoln, Iredell, Rowan and Stanley counties. The top seven teams advance to the state competition at Cedarock Park on April 22-23 in Burlington, NC. The CIS team that will advance consists of Ashwin Chandrasekar, Blaise Kress, Colin Moore and Corey Terral. Science teacher Saretha Lavarnway organized the students’ participation in the event
