An International Experience for Your Family

One of the most important events of the year happens at CIS this Friday. We will be hosting 12 delegates from countries around the world: Algeria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Botswana, Cameroon, Laos, Malaysia, Montenegro, Nigeria, Pakistan, South Africa, Thailand and Uganda. Our guests are part of a program coordinated by the U.S. State Department and International House, a Charlotte, N.C.-based nonprofit organization that promotes cross-cultural communication and understanding.

The visit will start with a 1pm assembly in our courtyard, including introductions, greetings from the delegates in their native languages, and songs by our choir. Students will be seated on the wood chips, so please be sure that your child has a towel at school for this purpose.

You can give your family a unique international experience by hosting one of the delegates for dinner Friday night. We will meet at 6:30pm and take them to either Ciro’s or Soho Café in Harrisburg. You will be expected to cover the cost of your and your guest’s dinners. If you are interested in participating, please contact Deb Hilton at 704-494-4309 or deb@thehiltonfamily.com (Note: the contact information sent with this week’s Tuesday folders was incorrect.)

World View Conference

Teacher Melissa Gayan joined over 400 NC educators at this week’s World View Symposium in Chapel Hill.

Melissa Gayan, Middle School Social Studies Teacher, and Dr. Beall had another type of international experience this week. They attended the World View Annual Symposium in Chapel Hill, entitled “Global Education: Infusing Global Themes into Every Classroom.” More than 400 NC educators attended and gained valuable information and resources for bringing the world to NC classrooms.

Custodial Help

We have a fantastic asset in parent Pam Dulaney who keeps our classrooms clean and orderly each day. But we are also seeking some custodial help for Mrs. Dulaney, from 5-7pm Monday-Friday. If you are interested or know of a reliable person, please contact Dr. Beall at 704-455-3847.

Adopt-A-Tree Landscaping

You’ve noticed that we have added some beautiful trees to our campus, along Hickory Ridge Road.  This landscaping was required by Cabarrus County to receive our final certificate of occupancy, including the exact specifications: 24 trees, half deciduous—half evergreen, 2.5 inches in diameter. These Southern magnolia and red maple trees can be adopted by your child’s class when they raise $360 (includes $40 for two of the 141 shrubs we are required to plant). A plaque will be installed to commemorate the class. Thanks to all of you who have already contributed to our Adopt-A-Tree campaign.

K-2 Playground Prep Day on November 6th

K-2 parents, please circle November 6th on your calendars! That’s the day we’ll create wonderful new features on our K-2 playground, and we need your help—especially anyone with carpentry skills.

Christy and Dan Whipple have done a great job planning the playground, in consultation with a well-known playground consultant. The playground will include some traditional equipment for large-muscle development, along with creative centers, quiet areas, and environmental education gardens and planters. Some of these items—like the planters and ball storage box—could be created before the 6th, and just installed that day. The Whipples have all the specifications on these. Just give them a call if you can help and they’ll coordinate everyone to make best use of your time, from 9am-Noon: 704-598-4055. We hope you’ll help us bring added joy to our youngest students’ play.

Next PIT Crew Meeting

The next meeting of the Parent Involvement Team—that’s our organization for ALL our parents—is next Monday, November 1st, at 7pm at the school.

School Lunch Credits

November 11th and 12th are set aside for professional development and an optional teacher work day. There will not be school those days. Parents who have ordered lunches already for those days will be given a credit for two meals in December. Credits are also provided for parents who have purchased hot lunches on field trip days. Our thanks to parent Karen Chiuchiolo for her hard work on the school lunch program.

Tuesday Folders

We’re pleased that the Tuesday folders have provided a means of communication between teachers and parents. These folders include only items that are pre-approved by the CIS Administration for distribution. If you have any information you want included in the Tuesday folders—for a parent committee, for an enrichment program, etc.—it must be received by Monday morning for our review.

Information Technology UPDATE

Thanks in large part to the tremendous volunteer efforts of teacher Laura Bost and parent Michael Owens, we now have new telephones and computers in each classroom. We’re updating our email system but already have voicemail boxes for each of our teachers. Please use these to communicate directly to your child’s teacher. Call 704-455-3847 and these extensions:
