Community

Collaboration and Networking

CIS' international focus is its collaboration and networking with local, state, national, and international resource people and organizations.

We participate in international programming sponsored by UNC-Chapel Hill’s “World View: An International Program for Educators.” This office organizes seminars, residential leadership programs for educators, international study visits, an annual symposium, and a “Partners” program with NC school districts, community colleges, and colleges. CIS is the first NC charter school to become a World View Partner.

Our Local International Community

We envision CIS serving as a resource center for the international community in and around Cabarrus County in which includes sponsorship of cultural celebrations and festivals, offering language and citizenship classes, and service projects with international groups. Collaborators include the International House in Charlotte, the Charlotte Sister Cities Program, the Mayor’s International Cabinet, the NC International Educators Association, UNC-Charlotte’s International Programs office, and the multitude of cultural groups within this region.

Our Local Environmental Community

Just as each grade at CIS is linked to a Sister City, each grade has responsibility for an aspect of environmental studies aligned with their science curriculum:

  • Kindergarten: the Uganda Garden
  • 1st Grade: Animal Homes
  • 2nd Grade: Butterfly Garden
  • 3rd Grade: UNITE Garden (Uganda and North Carolina - International Teaching of the Environment)
  • 4th Grade: Nature Trail
  • 5th Grade: Recycling Program
  • 6th Grade: Composting Progra
  • 7th Grade: GLOBE (NASA Program)
  • 8th Grade: Stream Watch, Water Quality
  • 9th Grade: Tree Frog Survey, Native Species Survey
  • 10th Grade:

We welcome community participation in all these projects and are forming
partnerships with environmental groups in the Charlotte region.
