MATHEMATICS AT CIS
The heart of mathematics is reasoning, which together with knowledge of appropriate mathematical content. forms the basis of mathematical power. The goal of mathematics education at Carolina International School is to enable all students to develop mathematical power and confidence in their ability to do mathematics. A curriculum that focuses on significant mathematical ideas, instead of isolated topics, encompasses both concepts and skills through rich explorations, problems, and applications that enable students to develop a genuine understanding of the big ideas of mathematics.
Mathematics at Carolina International School includes but is not limited to:
- Applying concepts, skills, symbols, and vocabulary identified in the NC Standard Course of Study for Mathematics
- Working with manipulatives to help form a sense of number
- Working with geometric shapes and patterns to facilitate the development of spatial reasoning
- Developing an accurate knowledge of number facts and number relationships in order to reason and solve problems well
- Beginning in the earliest grade levels, using students’ own knowledge and experience to solve challenging tasks in mathematics, working alone, in pairs, and in small and large groups
- Developing problem-solving and critical thinking skills through application of mathematics to real-life problems
