Mathematics
The heart of mathematics is reasoning, which together with knowledge of appropriate mathematical content forms the basis of mathematical power. The goal of mathematics education at Carolina International School is to enable all students to develop mathematical power and confidence in their ability to do mathematics.
The Investigation Program is based on years of Natural Science Foundation and National Council of Mathematics research on how children learn mathematics.
In grades 7-10 CIS follows the North Carolina Mathematic Standard Course of Study - numbers & equations, measurement, geometry, data analysis & probability, and algebra.
Curriculum
Students apply concepts, skills, symbols, and vocabulary identified in the NC Standard Course of Study for Mathematics. They work constantly with manipulatives to help form a number sense. Work with geometric shapes and patterns is emphasized to facilitate the development of spatial reasoning. Students develop an accurate knowledge of number facts and number relationships in order to reason and solve problems.
The Math curriculum begins in the earliest grade levels, using student knowledge and experience to solve challenging problems, work independently, in pairs, and in large groups. They develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills through application of mathematics to real-life problems.
